The Oxford 70s team defeated the Cambridge 70s team by a single point in the 2019 Generations Event held at Farmoor on Saturday 28 September 2019.
Eight teams turned up on the windy morning and, after a stern briefing by organiser Phil Derry, sailed one race each. With squalls of over 30 knots coming through regularly, one jib blown out, one crew lost overboard, and several capsizes, discretion was ruled the better part of valour and everyone came ashore.
Phil planned to run some ‘friendly’ fleet racing during the rest of the day, but the wind declined to cooperate and racing was abandoned at midday. That left the 70s teams in contention for the Bell Trophy, having won their races without having to call on their handicaps. Oxford 70’s had it by a point and so ran out worthy winners of Generations 2019.
The AGM and dinner were held in Kellogg College as usual, with the dinner proving even more convivial than ever. A big thank-you to Phil Derry and his Oxford team for all their work in organising the day, and to Chris Pugh and Kellogg College for the excellent dinner.
