It is with very great regret that we record the death in Northampton of Anthony Lunch (Mansfield College) on Thursday 20 October 2022. He suffered a short illness of pneumonia and complications.
Anthony was a keen sailor from his Sevenoaks School days, winning the Itchenor Schools Week in 1962 and sailing on three victorious Oxford Varsity Match teams (captaining one of them in 1967). He also represented the British Universities on one of their American tours and had campaigned a Swallow with Andrew Reid at Itchenor for the past 25 years.
Anthony was President of the Society in 1995-97 and took a close interest in the OUYC right from his undergraduate days – for which he was awarded the prestigious RYA Lifetime Commitment Award in 2018. That link provides some details of his great OUYC involvement.
But Anthony’s abilities and energies were not directed towards sailing only. The needs of the developing world were always close to his heart and after initiating the Mondo Challenge volunteering organisation he founded the Mondo Foundation in 2004 to continue the work. The aim of the charity is to encourage and facilitate students, teachers, and others to take a career break to do useful work with local community organisations in remote parts of the world such as Nepal and the Himalayan Region of India.
At this time our thoughts are with his wife Martine, his children Chris, Nick, Cecilia and his grandchildren. A more detailed obituary will be available for a time on the OUYC website.
