It is with great regret that we have learned of the death, in December 2017, of Ross Coles (initials R R A). Ross was the son of the well-known yachting publisher, Adlard Coles. He went up to Clare in 1946 to read medicine and sailed on the winning 1948 Cambridge team. He captained the losing 1949 team and was elected a member of the Society in 1950.
Ross sailed continuously and competitively during most of his life. He was for a time Queen’s Sailing Master and in charge of the Royal Dragon, ‘Bluebottle’. He was also a distinguished ENT specialist, and contributed a good many papers to scientific journals during his career in Nottingham.
Photographs of the 1948 and 49 Cambridge teams are up on the CUCrC website.
