A Society Exodus team emerged victorious in a excellent Oxford Magnum held at Farmoor 3/4 November 2018, defeating Wessex Exempt 2-1 in the final. The ‘official’ Society team finished 2nd in the Silver League, just behind Society Exodus, and so missed out on the semi finals. Oxford, spear-headed by Event Organiser Inés Pont Sanchis and supported by all the usual suspects in race organisation and umpiring, ran a flawless Magnum for the 20 competing teams.
Details
Fresh winds on the Saturday provided excellent racing, with cut-downs being used for most of the day. Lighter winds on the Sunday tested different skills with the entry being separated into Gold, Silver, and Bronze fleets. Two university teams, Cambridge and Exeter, reached the semi finals, but bowed out there to the two finalists. Full results will be available for a time on the kSail website.
The final went to the full three races. Society Exodus won the first race convincingly, but Wessex Exempt struck back to take the second by a similar margin. In the final deciding race Wessex Exempt held a winning combination for most of the race. However, at the final turning mark, Wessex Exempt made an unwise, indeed unnecessary, manoeuvre and were given a spin. Society Exodus seized this gift with both hands and rolled into a 2, 3, 4 combination to take the race and the trophy.
