CSC Victorious in 2019 Oxford Magnum – November 2019

CSC proved victorious the 2019 Oxford Magnum, held at Farmoor Reservoir 9/10 November 2019.   Fading wind resulted in a ‘sudden death’ one-race final, with CSC overcoming Royal Thames Blue.   Cambridge Blue overcame Royal Thames Red – in a similar petit final – to take the Bronze Medal. The Society finished 5th in the Gold League – missing out on the semi finals by just one tie-break point.

Good organisation, presided over by the irrepressible duo of Jo and Keith Sammons, gave all 21 attending teams a great weekend of sailing. The weather was cold and wet on the Saturday, but warm sunshine on the Sunday proved a redeeming feature. After a good Stage 1 round robin on the Saturday, the fleet was split into three leagues, each of seven teams.

CSC performed indifferently on the Saturday, finishing 11th overall, but found their form on the Sunday to storm unbeaten to the top of the Silver League and on through to victory in the final. Oxford finished 5th in the Silver League and Cambridge Pink finished top of the Bronze League, losing just one race on the Sunday. Full results will be available for a time on the kSail website.

As often happens at the Magnum, graduate teams dominated the lists. Three of the four semi finalists were graduate teams, with Cambridge the only university to get that far. In addition, most of the graduate semi finalists were ex-Cambridge sailors!

Congratulations to OUYC on an excellent fixture, and a big thank you to race officers, umpires, helpers, and Oxford SC and its staff, who all worked tirelessly to ensure a great weekend for everyone.
