Oxford and Cambridge dominated all the other universities in the RYA/BUSA Ladies National Championships held at Spinnaker SC on 25/26 February 2017. Only the non-student team of Royal & Northern finished ahead as overall (National) winners. Oxford Blue took the BUSA Gold Medal, Cambridge took Silver, and Bristol took bronze. Three teams of the entry of 14 came from the North, keen to encourage Southern teams to make the journey to the many excellent team racing events now being held in Scotland.

Strong winds gave exciting sailing during the weekend, with gale-force gusts making the semi finals and finals a trial of strength, as well as causing several spills. While some team racing was evident at the start, it was boat speed and seamanship in the extreme conditions that dictated the outcome. Oxford Blue disposed of Bristol 2-0 in the first semi final. The powerful Royal & Northern team took the second semi final 2-0 from Cambridge.

Oxford Blue held their own in the first race of the final, winning 1, 4, 5. Royal & Northern struck back hard to take the next two races convincingly – assisted by two Oxford boats fluffing their start in the second race. Oxford also suffered a dislocated knee cap injury in the second race, but sportingly (and painfully!) kept going to contest the third race. Full results of all the rounds are available on the event website (opens in a new window).

Congratulations to all the Oxford and Cambridge ladies on a very fine performance, and a big thank-you to Spinnaker, Wessex, Race Team, Umpires, and other helpers who made such an excellent championships possible.

  1. Well done all. Note that the talent in the Royal & Northern team is none other than Nicole McPherson (nee Johnson) who was O&CSS Captain 2001-2004 and Oxford Captain before then, so it is actually a clean sweep!
