Early Spring Newsletter – February 2016

As you will see from the signature block in this email, I have taken over from long-serving (long-suffering?) Jeremy Atkins as Secretary of the O&CSS. I hope I can do half as good a job as Jeremy, but bear with me as I learn the ropes!

Spring Party – Oxford & Cambridge Club – Thursday 10 March

Once again, the Spring Party is being held in conjunction with the OUYC and CUCrC at the Oxford & Cambridge Club, Pal Mal at 6:30pm on Thursday 10th March and organised by Tom Low. The evening will include an address by Sam Davies and Annie Lush, skipper and crew of the all-girl boat in the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race. We have booked a bigger room at the O&C Club in anticipation of the interest that Sam and Annie will generate. Numbers are still limited and last year we were ‘full house’, so book in good time to ensure your place. I look forward to welcoming you at the O&C Club that evening.

Tickets are £15 a head (£6 less than last year!) and partners and friends are very welcome. Apply to your university representative for tickets. If you transfer money (use your surname and initial as reference), please email them as well to advise of your attendance.
Oxford: Tom Low: Transfer to: OUYC Life Members Boat Fund, a/c no: 84229896, sort code: 607003.
Cambridge: Anthony Butler: Transfer to: Mr A R Butler, a/c no: 10165317, sort code: 090640 – or send a cheque to A R Butler, 19 Hendons Way, Holyport, Maidenhead. SL6 2LF.

Generations Event and AGM – Oxford – Saturday 1 October

Once again the Generations Event is being organised, with the ever-willing help of the OUYC, on Saturday 1 October at Farmoor followed by the Annual Dinner and AGM in Kellogg College that evening. Start recruiting your team now and let the organiser Lottie Rapson know of your intentions! Ladies teams are encouraged and cross-generation teams are allowed, particularly where you are aiming to be the Society team of the year and go on to do the Magnum, Cam Cup, and Wilson Trophy. The Society team receives financial assistance with event entry fees.

Member News

Congratulations to Ian Walker on winning the Volvo Ocean Race and being elected Yachtsman of the year; to Claire Lasko, Honor Fell, Fiona Hampshire and Suzy Russell(HC) on taking Silver in the 2015 RYA Winter Match Racing; and to Jeremy Vines and his crew on winning the ISC Rating Trophy in the Round-the-Island Race.

We also record, with regret, the deaths during the past year of Standley Bushell and Jonathan Janson. Jonathan played an active and prominent role in sailing administration in his later years; Standley was a lifetime staunch supporter of Cambridge sailing and a keen White Boat sailor at NBYC.
