Brian Heron – February 2016

It is with great regret that we record the death of Brian Heron (St Catharines 1951) on 11 February 2016; he had been unwell for some time. Brian was always a keen Firefly sailor and team racer, and was the power behind the very successful Hollingworth Lake team of the 1960’s and 70’s. He won his Half Blue in each his three years at Cambridge, sailing on the winning Cambridge team of 1951/52. A more detailed tribute has been published on the Yachts & Yachting website (opens in a new window).

Any sailor will be welcome at the Memorial Service at St. Chad’s, Rochdale Parish Church, Sparrow Hill, Rochdale on Thursday 17th March at 11am to celebrate Brian’s life and, afterwards, at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club.

  1. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Brian Heron. I first started sailing our Firefly ‘Water Music’ at Hollingworth Lake in 1954. I was a young engineering apprentice in Trafford Park at the time. and would take the early-morning train from Manchester to get there in time to race every Sunday.
Brian was the man to beat, and knew every wind pattern whistling down around the Pennines!
He and the club members were very good to me at that early stage of my career; Brian will be missed. David C-H

  2. Brian was one of the ‘greats’ in my early Firefly days of the 1960s. An outstanding competitor and always the most charming and supportive of sailors. I remember him coming to what was probably the first of the Intergeneration events, sailing for the 1950s. The team included the likes of Ian Butler and, on a breezy day, several of the ‘oldies’ capsized but braved the cold water to return to their boats. Brian was a legend and an inspiration. He will be much missed.
